I recently bought a few Zebra Finches from a local breeder here in MD, and I have them set up in a small flight cage with bamboo nests hanging. They started laying the cutest little eggs, and I was so happy until one day I was getting ready to clean their cage and noticed that most of the eggs that they had laid were on the bottom of the cage floor, either cracked or broken open!!!!???? Why did that happen? Did they throw them out? Or did they accidentally fall out? I'm puzzled.......

In my experience raising finches is that if you find them suddenly on the floor of thier cage it is most likely due to them being "infertile" eggs. The finches, as well as other birds instinctively know if the egg is fertile or not.

Yes, George you are absolutely right! All birds are hard-wired to recognize between a good egg & a BAD egg! Don't we wish that we could do that so well?? LOL
Seriously, though they also will seperate them in the nest, that's why you may find a group of eggs all cuddled together & warm and a single egg off to the side & cold. It's on the "cutting floor" list!
