"What should I Buy?" a HAND-RAISED, HAND-REARED, HAND-TAMED, or PARENT-RAISED BIRD?

-Those are some questions that some may ask themselves..........

This page has been set up to help answer all those questions about buying birds that most purchasers have.
The information provided here is only given for the assistance of the public that the experience of buying a bird can be made easier,  please use it wisely and for the purpose it was intended.
Note that most of the information on this page is from my own personal experience or from that of fellow breeders, there are always differences of opinion.

One big question most buyers have is "What is the difference between THEM ALL. "

I am hoping to clarify that exact question during the next few paragraphs.

HAND RAISED / HAND REARED / HAND FED / HAND TAMED / AVIARY BRED / PARENT RAISED

What is the difference?
(many different names & somewhat confusing to those not familiar with the bird world)

First of all, Handraised, Handreared & Handfed & Handtame basically means the same thing.

It is traditionally a bird that is removed from the nest as a young chick, usually 2-3 wks old (prior to feather development) or egg and handraised/hand reared & handfed by loving people in a well socialized environment to enable the bird to develop and become a well adjusted companion pet.

These birds are spoon or syringe fed 99% of the time. Occasionally there is the requirement to gavage or tube  feed very young birds, normally if there are feeding complications at birth or days following.  Just as long as it is not adopted as general overall practice used only in an emergency situations. The bird is then socialized & cared for and in this instance it this particular bird would virtually make a good companion bird.

A truly handraised, handtame & handfed bird will not be afraid of humans and will not be scared to accept a pat from a stranger. Some could be a little cautious of strangers initially, but will normally come round within half hour or so of ONE ON ONE INTERACTION, then they begin to get curious about the strange face & accept them as a friend.

The exception to this rule is some of the larger parrots that do take a little more time to become adjusted to strangers and may appear scared - but will NEVER TRY TO BITE  their caregivers.  (there are exceptions to every rule- as a bird is an animal & just like any other animal you can never predict their behaviour)

A truly handraised, handtame, handfed bird DOES NOT BITE INTENTIONALLY,  unless of course it becomes scared or is hurt and in that case the scarer or hurter deserves to be bitten, this applies also to the person who chases a bird around the room in attempts to capture them, and once captured the person is bitten, ????  Wouldn't you bite?  And you also would be less likely to go to that particular person again in the near future- the bonds of trust are broken.

These birds have been given lots of love and attention and have been introduced to all sorts of different environments and noises like vaccuum cleaners, barking dogs, yelling kids and slamming doors, other birds, doorbells ringing, microwaves beeping, etc... It has been introduced to strange people and other birds and or animals. This socialisation process allows the birds to become comfortable with change and not to become startled at the slightest different thing or change in routine.

COST: A truly handraised, handtame & handfed bird is alway more expensive than other forms of birds. This is because the carer has put in weeks and in the case of larger birds months of time and effort to produce a well adjusted pet that with future love and nurturing will become a loved and loving member of your family.

FORCE FED or GAVAGE FED

This is a bird that has been taken from the nest at any age from egg to almost fledged.

It is then fed by humans as often as required for the age and size of the bird.

They are ROUTINELY gavage (force) fed with crop needles or crop tubes that are placed down the throat of the baby bird to faciliate SPEED in getting all the birds fed at one time.  Some birds get a damaged or torn esophagus  or crop and become sick & die from the result of their injuries.
Occasionaly the carer uses alternative methods of feeding, however the outcome in most breeders opinion is the same regardless. Not here at OASIS, we only syringe feed (NO NEEDLE involved) or spoon feed our babies so that every drop of their food is tasted, not forced down their throat to insure time management.  Yes, it takes more time, Yes, it's messy!  Yes, but it produces a more loving & caring bird, after all we are it's parents & what parent would feed a child that way????

A gavage or force fed bird is often purported to be handraised , handtame or handfed but has not had any form of socialisation or love and attention.

Force Fed or Gavage fed birds, that have not been adequately socialized are often very skitish around people and will run from the hand of a stranger and in some cases attempt to bite total strangers.

This is due primarily to the lack of socialisation and lack of "play time". They are simply fed then returned to their box or cage and ignored till the next feed and the only handling they recieve is at feed time. This does not make for a well adjusted- good companion bird.

This is common in the case of bird breeders caring for very large volumes of birds all at the same time.

Force Fed or gavage Fed birds often become more and more independant over time due to the absence of socialization, and will not accept much interaction with humans and often wind up with behavioural issues later down the track.

COST: An honest breeder / caregiver will explain that their birds are handfed (although they are force fed)and they will be less expensive than a truly handraised, handfed, handtame bird as there has not been as much time and effort put into the bird as with a truly handraised, handtame & handfed baby bird.

HAND TAMED BIRDS (this term is used very loosely by some breeders. It's the same name- DIFFERENT METHOD)

A SOLELY, Hand tamed bird by definition of some, is one of two things first one being a bird that has been removed from the parents when it fledges (flys for the first time) it has been raised & fed ONLY by the parents and then bought indoors to finish the weaning process by the caregiver and handled to attempt to get the bird USED TO THE HAND (thus the loose term here used as "handtamed" .)

The other one is a bird that has been raised by it's parents but has been just HANDLED- regularly by the breeder, NOT HANDFED & NOT SOCIALIZED while it is in the nest so that when the bird fledges it is still quiet and not too scared of hands then removed from the aviary, this form of so-called "hand tamed bird "will be marginally quieter than the first form of hand tamed bird.

Either way the result is the same, a bird that will possibly sit on your finger or hand and may somewhat tolerate people and possibly enjoy a scratch or two.

Hand tamed birds (ones raised EXCLUSIVELY by the above method in this paragraph) can over lengthy periods of time, sometimes years - become decent pets but will never be a true companion pet like a handraised, handfed, handtame & socialized bird will.

Birds raised by this method still have all the wild instincts that are bred into them by their feathered parents.

They are more likely to develop behavioural issues like screeching and biting.

COST: A parent raised/ then human hand tamed bird should never be mistaken for a handfed, handtame & handraised and most of all WELL SOCIALIZED bird, these birds typically will cost a lot less..

AVIARY BRED / PARENT RAISED

Aviary Bred and Parent Raised mean the same thing. These birds will not tolerate interaction with their caregiver because they have not been handfed, handraised & handtamed by the breeder.

A Parent raised bird is a bird that has been hatched and raised COMPLETELY by it's bird parents with no interferance from people.

Parent raised birds are mostly scared of people and will happily take a nip if they get the chance.

If a Parent raised bird is purchased young enough they can SOMETIMES become SOMEWHAT tame with a lot of time and effort. But the effort is much & the reward of having a very handtame companion bird is near impossible with these aviary bred / parent raised birds.  They are pretty much - just a pretty bird in a cage to admire & look at, but NOT socialize with.

COST: A Parent raised or Aviary Bred bird is the cheapest form of bird available as there has been no effort on the breeder in the care of the bird other than feeding the parents.
