Will you ship by the U.S. Post Office?

Yes, we can ship USPS EXPRESS for birds such as (zebra, society, gouldian finches, lovebirds, parakeets, cockatiels, canaries, etc.)CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS(scroll to the bottom of the page).

All of the birds we ship via this method have arrived at their destinations without incident & have traveled without a feather out of place!  The postal service has done an excellant job of making sure that our birds arrive safely & quickly.  Generally within 24-48 hrs- (however we do not guarantee birds that have been delayed due to weather related issues or traffic delays). When shipping an OASIS AVIARY bird, we take great care in making sure that they have ample seed/food, hydration fruits such as oranges, watermelon, tomatoes, etc.  wood shavings on the floor of the transport box for proper footing of the bird while in transit, and a natural perch so that they may rest in a natural state. If in the event of inclement weather, we implement the useage of non-toxic air activated hand warmers (which generally last 10+hrs to help regulate the inside temp of the bird's shipping container).

The price of the USPS EXPRESS SHIPPING includes Insurance during their travel, the specialized avian shipping container, transportation of the bird for shipping. We guarantee live arrival of the birds while in transit until they reach their destination.  We do not however guarantee live arrival on Gouldians & Canaries.  *please read special notes on Oasis Shipping page.* and on the USPS EXPRESS shipping options.

I want to have my birds shipped, is it safe?

You can have your bird/s shipped via DELTA AIRLINES or CONTINENTAL AIRLINES, (click on the photos on the order birds page & it will give you information regarding both.  At Oasis Aviary, we ship approximately 80% of our birds.  People who live greater distances from us are glad that we offer this, not all aviaries do.  We have found shipping birds via the airlines quite safe, and to date have not encountered any problems.  We also offer delivery and you can also pick up your bird/s at our aviary. If you would like either of these options, please click on appropriate box.

I don't know too much about parrots, will I get any advice from you?

When you purchase a baby from us we will give you a DETAILED INFORMATION sheet pertaining to your type of bird that outlines care & feeding instructions.  You will find it very helpful. We also recommend that you pick up a good parrot book or two & start reading about the many types of issues related to owning & caring for your new parrot.  We offer books for sale that we have found very informative & have gotten rave reviews from our customers.  We will guide you through parenting your parrot, if you have never owned one before, and we offer over the phone counseling on every bird that we sell.

What hours are you open? I'd like to come & pick out a bird.

This is a commonly asked question that we get a lot.  We're sorry, but we are not a retail facility open to the public.  We operate a family owned aviary that is based on a "closed aviary", (meaning:  we do not let visitors visit our aviary-due to disease prevention & control).

We do however allow our customers who are wishing to pickup their purchased bird/parrot from our aviary, but it is done at a separate location, not in the aviary itself.  What is very important to us is that we protect our birds from potential viruses, that can literally wipe out an entire aviary in very little time! People can carry these viruses on their clothing, shoes, or person.  We don't attend bird shows, or go to retail pet shops & supply stores that have live birds for this very reason.  When we bring a new bird into our breeding program, it is under strict quarantine regulations for 60 days (most aviaries only quarantine for 30 days, if at all). This time frame is before any new bird is introduced to our existing flock.

What types of birds do you recommend?

Choosing a bird or parrot is strictly a personal choice that no one can make for you.  We suggest that you go to pet shops (but don't buy, they are too expensive & your bird will not be as tame as an OASIS AVIARY bird). Just look around to see what type of bird sparks your interest.  Then pick up a book there or visit your local library, or surf the Internet to obtain all the information that you can before you decide.  You will be better off that you did.  There is nothing worse than buying a bird on a whim, getting it home, and then deciding that this type of bird was just not right for you.  If you find yourself in that position after you have bought a bird from us, contact us & we will be glad to take him/ her back.  We would rather you do that than for the bird to suffer the consequences of having multiple homes, for reasons such as bad behaviour, screeching, screaming, biting, etc.

What birds do you have available?

When you click on a photo of a bird you will notice "availability", if marked with a YES, we have that species of bird. If marked NO or SOLD we do not at this time, but will post it when we do have that particular bird available. Please do not email us with questions regarding "availability", please refer to this section of each species of bird & it will be noted. We update this section on a regular basis.

If a reserved baby or purchased baby is not available, for whatever reason your deposit/payment will be applied to another baby, same species, same sex (if DNA is ordered) currently available or future clutch.

Do you sell unweaned or out of nest babies?

No, we DO NOT.  We get lots of emails per day regarding this issue and it just can not be said enough-we do not sell unweaned or out of nest babies to even so called "experienced hand-feeders"- This is very dangerous to the babies, we care about all of our babies @ Oasis Aviary, and would never do anything to jeapordize their health or welfare.  Not to mention that selling unweaned "anything" is illegal.

When do you hand-feed your babies, how often per day do you feed them & play with them?

From the time the baby is about 2 wks old we pull it from the nest (only if an order is received) and then we hand-feed the baby a special blend of avian baby formula in a measured syringe (without the needle of course) the baby is  fed, generally every 3-4 hours around the clock when they are very small, then  gradually over a period of weeks  & sometimes into months (depending on the species of bird) reduces in the number of feedings per day until they are completely weaned.  We abundance wean our birds here at OASIS AVIARY, (meaning that we give them all types of fresh fruits & veggies, pellets & seed and then allow the bird itself to wean on it's own, away from the hand-feeding formula). We never force wean a bird so that it can be shipped or picked up by it's new owner sooner. This can be fatal to the bird by abruptly discontinuing it's baby formula & it has not developed the instinct to fill it's own crop on its own with food.  By doing our tried & true method here at OASIS, we can insure you will be getting a completely happy & content weaned baby.  We will never ship, deliver or relinquish an unweaned baby to a customer.

I live in/plan to visit the St Louis, Mo area. May I come to see your birds?

Sorry, we do not operate a retail store nor a showroom to view our birds, as we do not have a facility open to the public. This policy protects our babies & breeder birds from theft and the possible introduction of disease from another facility, or contact with strangers that our birds have not come in contact with before, that could be carrying a disease or virus on thier person, clothing or shoes. Simply stated, we operate a "closed aviary system" for the disease protection of our breeding flock and that of their offspring.  We care about the welfare of our birds @ OASIS AVIARY. We adhere to a strict quarantine procedure before any new bird is introduced to our flock, (max. 60days).  We know that this may sound puzzling to you, however most aviaries operate on a similar level.  We have not lost a bird yet & don't intend to!  We're sorry that we do not offer a showroom or a retail facility, as this may be of an inconvenience to you.  However, when you are purchasing/purchased a bird from Oasis Aviary, we send pics & updates on the baby that you have selected.  If we could let everyone that asks, come to our aviary we could experience a devastating spread of any number of avian diseases. Not intentionally of course, but these microorganisms can be present on clothing, shoes, etc that a potential customers could have came in contact with while visiting Pet Stores, Pet Shops, others that have birds as pets & can therefore infect our flock with potentially deadly diseases.  We have far too much time & money invested in our breeding stock & offspring to allow such a catastrophe to occur, so we ask that you abide by our stringent policy so that we may provide to you an EXTREMELY HEALTHY BIRD, to enjoy for many years to come!  Pet Stores can't offer this health protection.

Will you sell me an unweaned baby/fertile egg?

No, we do not sell unweaned babies to the public and do not sell eggs.  We will take a deposit to reserve an egg or a baby, and the resulting baby is then sold completely weaned. Weaning times vary, we abundance wean our Oasis Aviary babies, so therefore an exact weaning time is undeterminate.

Can you ship in cold winter weather/hot summer weather?

We can ship to most states year-round, depending upon the weather at the time of
shipping. If the temperature will be above 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit or below 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the shipment will be delayed until the temperature is safe to ship, if shipped via DELTA airlines.

If shipped via CONTINENTAL airlines, temperatures are not a factor due to climate control during the flight, so your baby can be shipped at any time.

How are your birds socialized?

The babies at OASIS AVIARY are all handled on a daily basis, during hand-feeding & socialization time. We touch them all over their bodies so that they are used to being handled and we put them out on play stands with other similar-sized babies so that they learn to play and exercise and socialize with other birds that we have. We do have cats & dogs here at the aviary, but we do not recommend allowing your pet dogs /cats access to your new bird unsupervised.  Cats & dogs, no matter how friendly are natural preditors of birds and cannot be left in the accompany of unsupervised birds.  At OASIS AVIARY, we hand-feed our babies, love them, talk to them, hold them and teach them to love humans, but we do not teach behaviors nor commands. Our babies are sold very tame, but not trained, as this part is for you, as their new owner, parent, guardian/flock leader to teach them.

What is the incubation time for parrot species?

The incubation period for most psittacine species is 24-28 days.

Will you make an exception to your policy and sell a baby unweaned or allow visitors to your nursery?

No, we do not make exceptions to our policies. Our policies were made to protect our birds and we do not alter our policies so please do not ask, thank-you!

Do you gavage feed or tube feed your babies?

No, our babies are fed by syringes unless there is a medical need to gavage feed.
We think babies should taste their food.

Are your birds vaccinated?

We do not have Polyoma Virus in our nursery and do not think this vaccine is at all necessary for most species from our nursery, therefore, we do not vaccinate our babies.

What happens to my deposit if an egg or chick dies?

The deposit is for next available BABY, not egg. Eggs are RESERVED for orders on our waiting list but are not ASSIGNED. Yes, we do occasionally lose an egg/baby but not often. You are guaranteed next available baby with a deposit.

If a reserved baby or purchased baby is not available, for whatever reason your deposit/payment will be applied to another baby, same species, same sex (if DNA is ordered) currently available or future clutch.

How do I know about the specifics of my bird's flight?

Flight times are mutually agreed upon by both OASIS AVIARY  and the customer.  The customer is supplied with the airline, flight number(s), air waybill number, and flight arrival time prior to departure.  It is recommended that you arrive at the airport no later than the expected flight arrival time so that your bird is not waiting at the airport for any length of time.  Customers will receive a confirmation call from us on the day of shipment.  A return call or e-mail to OASIS AVIARY informing us that the bird(s) arrived safely is greatly appreciated.

We are not open to the general public, only customers who have purchased a bird/s from Oasis Aviary will be permitted to pick up their bird/s at our aviary. No one will be permitted to tour our aviary or view our available birds simply due to the fact of disease control of our breeding flock, & their babies. Strangers upset our breeders who are in the process of incubating, raising & feeding their young. Distractions, loud  noises & strangers in the immediate area startles the breeders and they may in turn harm their young.  Most aviaries operate on a closed aviary system, this is due to the simple fact that anyone may have the potential of carrying life threatening viruses on their clothes, shoes or person. We do not attend bird shows & we do not visit pet shops or retail stores that sell live birds for this reason. We expect that you accept our strict policy on this matter. Thank you.

Note: *total amount must be paid 2 weeks prior to shipping*

Do you have any suggestions after I take my parrot home?
  1. Lower your energy level whenever you approach your bird, and never do anything that threatens or scares your bird.  Parrots are prey animals and are quick to become suspicious if they feel threatened. Sudden and quick movements will often alarm a bird.  It's one reason that many birds become anxious or agitated around small children.

  2. Never pull your hand quickly away from your bird or have a lot of hand motion over its head.  This action will give the bird mixed signals as to what you want him to do.  Your bird must always trust your hands.

  3. It's a good idea to establish boundaries from the beginning by letting the bird know you are in charge. This can be done by keeping the bird at chest level and practicing the "step up" command with your bird every day.   Never pick up your bird by its body, legs, or from behind the bird.  You should place your finger, hand, or arm under its belly while you are facing him and instruct the bird to "step up." Another way to establish control with your bird is to place your thumb over your bird's foot while he is on your hand.  Just resting your thumb over his foot is sufficient.  If, at any time, the bird should try to establish itself as the flock leader, do not allow yourself to become intimidated.   Birds are very smart and will pick up on this quickly.  Once a bird knows it has the upper hand, it becomes more difficult for you to regain control.

  4. Parrots should not be allowed to climb up to your shoulder.  If you want your bird on your shoulder, YOU place him there and YOU remove him.  This is yet another means to establish control with your bird.

  5. A healthy bird is a happy bird.  Proper nutrition is essential to maintaining good health.  An all seed diet will eventually lead to illness.  Therefore, be sure to feed a well-balanced diet consisting of a variety of healthy foods.  The importance of a good diet cannot be stressed enough. View diet instructions here.

  6. A fairly regular routine of playtime, feeding time, and rest time gives the bird a sense of security. Neglected birds may become depressed and possibly ill while overindulged birds may develop bad habits.  It's important to strike a balance, and consistency works best.  A bird that is caged for days or weeks at a time will begin to resent attempts at social interaction and become apprehensive at being removed from its secure confines.  On the other hand, a bird that is overindulged and allowed to have free run of the house will resent being caged and may display its displeasure through screaming or feather plucking.  The bird needs to know how to amuse itself when caged as well as enjoy its social time.

  7. Socialize your bird by allowing family and friends to handle your bird.  Always make sure anyone handling your bird has CLEAN hands.  Always supervise your bird's playtime with young children.

  8. Your bird must be taught to stay where you put him (e.g. on a tree stand or play gym).  If the bird leaves its play area, calmly and consistently put him back where he was, and he will eventually learn to stay there.   Always make the play areas enticing and exciting.  This will naturally keep your bird where you want him to stay.  Change the toys in your bird's cage often.   This will not only stimulate your bird, but it will prevent repetition and boredom.

  9. Baby birds often go through a "teething" stage sometimes referred to as the "terrible two's."   Birds are very inquisitive and because they use their beaks to explore different textures and substances, they will sometimes clamp down a little too hard on human body parts.  This should not be mistaken as aggressive behavior.  A bird will usually outgrow this over time, and it's important to know how to handle this phase of development.  Don't overreact if the bird gets a little rough but rather try to distract it.  Offer the bird a hand held toy or popsicle stick to chew on and try to keep your finger out of its mouth.  You can also try using the "up" command to ladder the bird from hand to hand.  As a last resort, quickly drop your arm, without dropping the bird, or rock your hand from side to side in an earthquake move.   The bird will become distracted by having to maintain its balance and will eventually get the message.

  10. Don't "beak wrestle" or "tweak" your bird's beak.  Your bird could get mixed signals when you want to pick him up.  Remember, your bird must always trust your hands.

  11. Know your bird's mood.  Most birds will give a signal that they are about to bite.  If you suspect your bird may bite, leave it alone for the time being.  It may be that the bird is busy eating, engrossed in playing with a toy, or just tired and is resting.  It's important to know that every bird has the potential to bite and, at some point, probably will.  If you are bitten, look at the event objectively and try to determine what provoked it.  You will be better equipped to avoid being bitten the next time.

  12. Respect your bird at all times.  If your bird doesn't want to be petted or skritched, do not insist, as it may lead to you getting bit.  Do not feed or skritch your bird through the bars of its cage.  This is the bird's home, and the bird should feel safe there.

  13. Know that birds are individuals just like us humans, and, therefore, have different preferences.  Take the time to learn what your bird likes and dislikes (including toys, food, etc.).  Keep in mind that your bird's likes and dislikes may change over time.  Change WITH him, NOT against him.

  14. Vocalization is a bird's natural form of communication and most birds do vocalize at certain times of the day.  Normal vocalization usually occurs in the early morning and late afternoon.  A bird may also scream for other reasons such as being hungry or not let out of its cage on time.   The overindulged or spoiled parrot can get into the bad habit of screaming for attention.  This behavior should not be encouraged.  It's best not to remove a screaming bird from its cage but rather wait until he's quiet. Birds thrive on drama, and screaming back at the bird will only prove to elevate the decibel level.  Try to ignore the screaming.  If this doesn't work, try moving the bird and cage to another room away from household activity until he quiets down.  Birds do make noise, some more than others.  Those who are sensitive to sound should make sure that they can handle the level of noise a particular species can produce prior to purchasing a bird.

  15. Always reward your bird with praise and a treat whenever he has done something positive.  Do not reward the negative.  For example, if your parrot begins screaming, don't yell back or go to him.  If you do respond to your bird under these circumstances, you have unintentionally created a negative reinforcement.  Now the bird thinks every time it screams, it will get a reaction from you, whether it is a good or bad reaction.

  16. One of the most appealing things about some parrots is their ability to talk.  Talking ability depends upon the particular species and the individual bird's desire to learn.  Therefore, don't set high expectations for your parrot.  It will be a letdown for you, and it is unfair to the bird.

  17. Once you can define and understand a negative behavior and what established it as a pattern, only then can you make positive attempts to change it.

  18. While there are many variables to the complex behavior of parrots, understanding the above basics can make a positive change in the way you approach your avian companion.

Do you vaccinate your birds or test them for avian diseases and should I vaccinate or have my new bird tested?

Possible Diseases in the Aviary - we to date have no incidences of disease @ OASIS AVIARY. (however, an exception of slight growth of gram negative bacteria which is not considered to a disease but is a harmless benign condition found in birds that are stressed due to change of environment, weaning, breeding, etc.  The reason our aviary has no incidence of disease is largely based on fact that our aviary operates on a COMPLETELY CLOSED AVIARY basis, *(meaning not open to the public) This is so that you & others can rest assured that OUR BIRDS ARE HEALTHY and free of Avian Diseases!  Lots of other aviaries cannot say the same thing, due to allowing visitors to their aviary to view & touch & handle the birds, they also are frequently attending BIRD SHOWS, SWAP MEETS, ANIMAL AUCTIONS, not implementing the 60 day strict 'new bird quarantine method'  that we use here.  And also letting others who HAVE BIRDS at home or have recently been 'shopping' for birds in retail locations visit their facility, shopping at places that sell birds, like PETSMART, PETCO, PETLAND, etc. is a bad scenario all together. If you MUST shop there, get in - get out and do not come in contact with the birds there that are for sale, that way you will cannot pick up & spread any avian disease to your bird at home.  The potential of disease carrying particularly on your hands & especially clothing is very great.  All of these places have the threatening possibility of creating a full fledged avian disease outbreak from the mass produced bird breeders to your pet bird.  We do not take these risks here at OASIS AVIARY & therefore offer our customers disease free birds- of which they are also ANTIBIOTIC & MEDICINE/CHEMICAL FREE & are not in the compromised health position to require vaccines or inoculations of such. We ask our prospective bird owners to seek the advise & expertise of a Certified Avian Veterinarian if they so desire.  OUR GUARANTEE BELOW:

OASIS AVIARY BIRD GUARANTEE:

All of our babies come with a 72 Hr. Health Guarantee. OASIS AVIARY GUARANTEES THAT, AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, OUR BABIES ARE FREE FROM CONGENITAL SICKNESS & HEREDITARY DEFECTS. We do not consider a slight growth of gram negative bacteria to be a disease but recognize that this is a stress-related reaction to the weaning process, being shipped &/or relocated to new environment . BUYER IS ENCOURAGED TO HAVE THE BIRD(S) EXAMINED BY A  Board Certified Avian Veterinarian, and must do so with 72 hours of receipt to validate the guarantee.
